California hazel (Corylus cornuta var. californica)
Size: Grows to 16' tall. Often has multiple stems and ball-shaped crown.
Leaves: Simple, alternate, deciduous. Oval, with double saw-toothed edges, heart-shaped base, and drip tip. Very hairy.
Fruit: Large nut (greater than 1/4"), enclosed in papery involucre.
Bark: Smooth and gray-brown.
Distribution: Found west of the Cascade crest.
