Size: Small tree (to 30' tall) or thicket-forming
shrub.
Leaves: Simple, alternate, deciduous.
Egg-shaped; 1"-4" long.
Margins doubly serrate or lobed and serrate. Commonly have large
stipules.
Fruit: Small black pome (apple) about
1/4" in diameter.
Twigs: Short (under
1" long), stiff thorns. No terminal bud.
Reddish-brown.
Bark: Thin; shallow fissures to scaly.
Distribution: Black hawthorn
ranges from southeast Alaska to central Nevada. It grows commonly in
western Oregon and can be found in
moist locations in
eastern Oregon.
