California-laurel (Umbellularia californica)

  • Size: Grows to 100' tall and 5' in diameter. Often has multiple stems and ball-shaped crown.

  • Leaves: Simple, alternate, evergreen. Pungent odor when crushed. Elliptical to lanceolate; 2"-6" long and 1" wide; smooth margins; dark green above and paler green below.

  • Fruit: Size and shape of a large olive; purple with yellow stalk when ripe; single large seed.

  • Bark: Smooth and gray-brown when young. Thin, reddish-brown, and scaly when mature.

  • Distribution: Only found along the coast of California and southwestern Oregon.
