Chestnut (Castanea)

This genus is not native to Oregon and is currently not fully described on this website.

 

  • Leaves: Long (10 inches), slender leaves with prominent curved teeth along edges.
  • Leaves have a shiny, waxy surface that make them look evergreen, but they're deciduous.
  • Fruit: Two to four smooth, brown nuts (edible after roasting) inside a very prickly burr that opens around Halloween.
