Basswood (Tilia)

This genus is not native to Oregon and is currently not fully described on this website.

 

  • Leaves: Simple, heart-shaped with uneven bases (4-6 inches long); often with bright red spires on upper surface, a result of an insects' laying eggs inside the leaf
  • Fruit: unique "ribbon leaf", a long, thin bract connected to a dangling cluster of pea-sized, hard fruits
  • Flowers: tiny and white, producing a fragrant smell and nectar loved by humans and bees alike
